  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster 16.
  23.  
  24.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  25.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  26.    labeled

  58. III. Installing the drivers
  59. ---------------------------
  60. Note:   If your Sound Blaster 16 card has an ASP chip, copy ASP.SYS to 
  61.     your SB16/DRV sub-directory and copy all W*.ASP files to your SB16/ASP
  62.     sub-directory.  Then reboot your system.
  63.     
  64.     If your Sound Blaster 16 card does not include ASP chip, copy all
  65.     W*.ACV files to your SB16/ACV sub-directory.
  66.      
  67.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  68.  
  69.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  70.  
  71.    3. You should have the following driver names in the Installed Drivers
  72.       list:
  73.  
  74.         MIDI Mapper
  75.         Timer
  76.         [MCI] CD Audio
  77.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  78.         [MCI] Sound
  79.  
  80.       If you have other drivers installed, please remove them with the
  81.       REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If any of these
  82.       drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.  (See your
  83.       Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you
  84.       restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  85.  
  86.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  87.  
  88.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  89.  
  90.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  91.  
  92.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  93.  
  94.    8. Select Creative Sound Blaster Auxiliary Audio and click on OK.
  95.  
  96.    9. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  97.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  98.       240H, 260H, or 280H, then select the one you changed.
  99.  
  100.   10. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  101.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  102.  
  103.   WARNING! - Steps 11 and 12 will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  104.          configuration.  If you want to keep your existing configuration,
  105.          click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG before continuing
  106.          the installation process.
  107.  
  108.   11. Select Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver and click on OK.
  109.  
  110.   12. Windows will ask if you want to use the current SB16FM.DRV
  111.       or install the new SB16FM.DRV - Select NEW and continue on.
  112.  
  113.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.
  114.       Repeat the instructions in step 9.
  115.  
  116.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  117.       DO NOT RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  118.  
  119.   15. Select Creative Sound Blaster Wave and MIDI and click on OK.
  120.  
  121.   16. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster Port address, MIDI address, 
  122.       Interrupt, and DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and 
  123.       continue on.
  124.  
  125.   17. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  126.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.

  129. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  130. -----------------------------------------------------
  131.  
  132.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  133.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  134.    "Important Notes" section below.
  135.  
  136.    1. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  137.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  138.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  139.  
  140.    2. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  141.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  142.  
  143.         Creative Sound Blaster  Auxiliary Audio
  144.         Creative Sound Blaster  Wave and MIDI
  145.         MIDI Mapper
  146.         Timer
  147.         Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver
  148.         [MCI] CD Audio
  149.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  150.         [MCI] Sound
  151.  
  152.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  153.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  154.       manual for more details).
  155.  
  156.    3. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  157.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  158.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  159.       this:

  176.    4. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  177.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file or a
  178.       CD, be sure you have the following settings in the [mci] section of
  179.       SYSTEM.INI
  180.  
  181.           [mci]
  182.           WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  183.           Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  184.           CDAudio=mcicda.drv
  185.  
  186.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  187.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  188.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  189.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  192. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  193. --------------------------------------------------
  194.  
  195.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  196.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  197.    consider.
  198.  
  199.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  200.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  201.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  202.       line is removed.
  203.  
  204.    2. Delete the file SBPMIXER.CPL in the Windows SYSTEM directory.  It is no
  205.       longer being supported.  The new SBPMIXER.EXE is now used instead and is
  206.       loaded automatically when you install the Sound Blaster drivers.
  207.  
  208.    3. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest SB16WMIX.EXE,
  209.       MMJBOX.EXE, SB16FM.DRV, SB16AUX.DRV and SB16SND.DRV have been copied to your
  210.       hard disk.  Check the size and date of these files against the listing
  211.       in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older versions
  212.       that you find in your system.

  215. VI. Important notes
  216. -------------------

  221.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  222.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  223.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  224.  
  225.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  226.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  227.  
  228.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  229.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  230.       Mode.
  231.  
  232.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  233.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  234.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  235.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  236.       Drivers Disk.
  237.  
  238.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  239.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  240.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  241.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  242.  
  243.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SB16FM.DRV, please use the
  244.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  245.  
  246.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  247.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  248.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  249.
